Short Biography

Dr. Troy Walden has 35 years invested in highway safety as a practitioner, investigator, trainer, curriculum and instructional designer, and researcher. He is a Senior Research Scientist with expertise in the areas of alcohol/drug traffic safety impacts, law enforcement, crash analysis/reconstruction, and behavioral traffic safety research.

Presently, Troy serves as the Director of the Center for Alcohol and Drug Education Studies within the Center for Transportation Safety where he provides strategic direction and operational oversight for a research portfolio that includes comprehensive alcohol and other drug research, education, and extension outreach services. He has worked on projects using complex data sets including: the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Crash Records Information System (CRIS); National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS); as well as other databases connected to trauma, citations, and criminal records.

Troy has served as principal investigator or senior research advisor in 31 funded research projects at the local, state, national, and international level. He has authored 53 reports/technical memorandum, presented research findings at 31 state, national and international symposiums, and written several articles for publication in professional journals.

Troy began his career with the City of College Station (Texas) Police Department. While there, he served in the Patrol Division, Recruiting and Training, Special Enforcement, and the Criminal Investigation Divisions. He retired as a Sergeant in the Patrol Division. He has worked for the Texas A&M University System as a Law Enforcement Training Program Coordinator where he managed statewide impaired driving education initiatives including the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and Drug Evaluation and Classification programs. As a private consultant, he has provided pre-trial investigative and expert witness services to criminal and civil attorneys involved in impaired driving and wrongful death cases.  

Troy received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University, his Master of Science Degree and Ph.D. in Education Administration and Human Development from Texas A&M University. Presently Troy directs the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s Center for Alcohol and Drug Education Studies and is a friend to many national and state committees and task forces.
