Short Biography
Itzel Guzman is an Assistant Transportation Researcher in the Multimodal Freight Program at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI). She has over three years of experience at TTI working on a variety of connected and autonomous vehicle, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, highway-rail grade crossing, freight, bicyclist and pedestrian safety, child restraint surveying and outreach, and seatbelt usage related projects. She was previously a researcher in the Behavioral Research Program at TTI, where she conducted field surveys, focus groups, phone interviews, outreach programs, other stakeholder engagement sessions, and Spanish translations and interpretations. Her work has supported the efforts of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the Texas Department of Transportation, first responders, emergency management personnel, and local communities.
She served as a soldier in the United States Army Texas National Guard prior to and during her time at TTI. She was a Combat Engineer (12B) trained as a HazMat Urban Search and Rescue Technician. Until recently, she served under the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Response Element (CRE) within the National Guard component as part of a federal response force for CBRN defense. This role led her to train with various first responder entities, including law enforcement agencies and fire departments across the country. This led her to her current focus in hazmat transportation and emergency preparedness.
Ms. Guzman received her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with a focus in International Politics and Diplomacy and a minor in Sociology from Texas A&M University in 2021.
