Abstract:
This project summary report summarizes the research performed in Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Project 0-5256. The development of full-matrix and other hardware technologies has made it possible to display symbols and other graphics features to the motoring public on dynamic message signs (DMSs). This study investigated how graphic and symbol displays can improve or assist communication with motorists. Three human factors evaluations of alternative designs identified specific design elements that should or should not be used in graphic displays. The project evaluated graphic display formats ranging from regional maps with an overview of the roadway system in an entire metropolitan area, called a graphic route information panel (GRIP), and also a display of a localized portion of the roadway. These means of communication with motorists proved effective, and basic design guidelines identified in this study can help TxDOT use these display formats effectively.
