Abstract
A theory which will predict the ultimate resistance of a drilled shaft footing to overturning loads was presented in Research Report 105-1 and was correlated with model tests reported in Research Report 105-2. The results of full-scale tests on drilled shaft footings were presented and compared to a "Tentative Design Procedure" in Research Report 105-3. In the research presented herein, long-term constant loads were applied to model and full-scale footings placed in soils which ranged from soft clay to sands. The purpose was to determine if the application of sustained overturning loads might cause excessive time-dependent footing movement. The results of these tests are presensed in graphs of footing rotation as a function of time and are compared to results obtained from creep tests on biaxial specimens. The long-term loads are compared to the "pull-over" static loads which were reported previously, in Research Report 105-3. Suggestions are made regarding design soil strengths for use in limiting footing movement resulting from sustained overturning loads.
