Abstract
To broaden the application of real-time freeway operations systems, the Texas Transportation Institute and the Texas Highway Department, in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Transportation, began a research project entitled "Freeway Control and Information Systems." One of the objectives of the project was to develop functional requirements for a freeway communications system. Toward this end, a questionnaire survey was conducted in the cities of Houston and Dallas. This report discusses the results of the survey which was directed at the evaluation of the following:|1. Driver attitudes toward the need for real-time freeway information|2. Potential use of and response to real-time freeway information|3. Driver preferences for mode of communication|4. The type of information desired by the freeway driver|5. Driver priorities regarding the locations where information would be most useful|6. Driver comprehension of and preferences for visual displays
