The Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) has been selected as a team leader for a major multiyear, multimillion dollar contract awarded recently by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Safety (HSA).
The wide-ranging safety support contract, which could provide as much as $19 million in funding over a five-year period, will involve numerous efforts to improve transportation safety and could include everything from highway design to bicycle/pedestrian safety and speed management.
“This significant contract is another example of how The Texas A&M University System coordinates across the university and its agencies to take a leading role on issues facing not only Texas but the entire nation,” said A&M System Chancellor John Sharp. “There is nothing more important to our economy than our transportation system, and I am proud of TTI for its leadership role in keeping our system safe and efficient.”
TTI was the only university-led team that was provided an award. TTI’s 10-member team includes faculty members from the Texas A&M University Dwight Look College of Engineering, as well as the extensive training expertise from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). The team will collaborate and assist the HSA with policy and regulatory analysis, technical studies, guidebooks and training support, as well as outreach and marketing support.
“Our safety researchers are eager to begin the life-saving projects that will be awarded during the length of this contract.” said TTI Agency Director Dennis L. Christiansen. “Their expertise in transportation safety is well-known throughout the country, and their role as team leaders on this national contract is well-deserved.”
“For the past 12 years, TTI has been involved as a subcontractor in the HSA contracts, but this time TTI is leading a team with 10 subcontractors,” said TTI Senior Research Engineer Paul Carlson, who will serve as the project’s co-principal investigator along with TTI Senior Research Engineer Karen Dixon. “We’ve leveraged our national reputation in the transportation safety arena, along with carefully chosen partners from both the academic and consulting worlds, to provide FHWA with innovative ideas and solutions to enhance transportation safety,” Dixon added.
