Abstract:
This four-page brochure describes the purpose of this Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) project, as well as the three major areas of research: the Transit Coordination Guidebook, an analysis of non-emergency medical trips and other demand response services (including the Medical Transportation Program [MTP]), and an analysis of travel demand along intercity corridors. The current separation of urban and rural public transportation services means that Texans who travel between jurisdictions - from rural or suburban communities into cities or the reverse - often find public transit a difficult or unviable mode of transportation. To truly serve the future transportation market, transit service will need to become less stratified and more regional, with seamless connections for passengers between one provider and the next. This research examined commuter travel to Texas' urban centers from outlying cities, suburbs and rural communities and developed recommendations, methodologies, and guidelines for regional transit coordination in Texas.
