State Headquarters Building

Our new building

Construction has begun on our new State Headquarters and Research Building (adjacent to the Gibb Gilchrist Building).

Completion and occupation is anticipated for Fall 2009.

We are working toward the project goal of a LEED Silver Certification. For more information on LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), see the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) webpage.

Building project stats

  • The building will be approximately 66,700 gross square feet
  • Three finished floors will feature:
    • Research and support space
    • Traffic Control Materials Research Facility
    • Headquarters and Administrative offices
    • Agency support offices
    • Conference and meeting facilities
    • Employee shower and locker facilities to encourage alternate modes of transportation and related health benefits
  • The building project obtained the successful award of the base bid plus all four alternates:
    • Alternate 1 — Build-out of third floor shell space
    • Alternate 2 — Covered plaza/walkway
    • Alternate 3 — Improved bicycle storage facilities
    • Alternate 4 — Covering for walkway between buildings
  • Construction is to be completed in four phases:
    • Phase 1 — Substantial completion of the new parking lot (April 30, 2008)
    • Phase 2 — Demolition of most of the current large lot (May 16, 2008)
    • Phase 3 — Construction of the building
    • Phase 4 — Completion of the remainder of the new parking lot

Community and growth

Our desire from the beginning has been to create a community or campus atmosphere between the Gibb Gilchrist Building and the new building. We have been successful at including many features that we desired either through experience in existing buildings or from staff ideas. Some of those features include a business center for visiting employees or agency guests, ample meeting rooms, wireless services in the building, gathering areas for impromptu meetings, space for conference registration, showers with changing areas, larger kitchens, ease of intuitive directionality (where am I and where is the exit?).

The third floor build-out (Alternate 1) will allow for growth space for the agency.
